In general, caryatids are defined as female figures that serve as the architectural support of the entablature of a building. (Yes, my vocabulary increased as a result of this photo.)
These ladies are faithful reproductions of the original Athenian caryatids, which are safely housed – at least 5 of which – in the Acropolis Museum. They’re there for continued protection and conservation. The 6th one is in the British Museum in London. Go figure.
